Dry needling (also known as medical acupuncture) can be used to release myofascial trigger points which are often the cause of pain in and around joints.
The treatment involves the use of ultra fine sterile (single use) needles, which are inserted into the trigger point. The aim is to reduce the neural activity in the trigger point thereby relieving the pain. It is effective for many common conditions such as;
- lower back ache
- buttock pain
- shoulder problems
- tennis elbow
- achilles pain
- carpal tunnel syndrome
- shin splints
- plantar fasciitis
- ankle pain
It is a safe treatment, which is relatively painless. I was very needle phobic ahead of my training, but having been used as a human pin cushion I adjusted and even began to enjoy the process. It definitely helped to reduce my own lower back pain.
